Holey Moley – Milwaukee

When my roommate from my freshman year of college lived in Milwaukee, I went to Holey Moley Coffee + Doughnuts twice within four months. I love their donuts (or doughnuts).

It's located in the Third Ward, which is an up-and-coming area in downtown Milwaukee. There's some great restaurants and bars, chic shops, the Journeyman Hotel and more. I highly, highly, highly recommend wandering around the Third Ward and getting some donuts, of course.

Gone for Donuts tip: Pre-order your donuts by 3 p.m. the day before, so you're guaranteed to get what you want. They only make a portion of their large menu every day and they don't take same-day orders. I'm an idiot and forgot to do this until 3:15 the day before my last visit, so I missed the cutoff, but 10/10 will do it the next time.

I brought my selection home to try with my dad because he's as much of a donut freak as I am. His favorite donut is the vanilla long john.

What'd we have?

  • Blood Orange Cake – This was a cake donut with an orange glaze and I liked it. The only thing I have to say about it is that I was expecting more orange. When I think of blood orange, I think of big flavor to match the vibrant color of the fruit. It was a good donut, though, so I'm not complaining.

  • Gingerbread Cake – The vanilla frosting was faaaaantastic. As a self-proclaimed vanilla frosted donut connoisseur, it was delightful; light, but not too sweet. The cake packed a punch of real ginger and clove that balanced well with the frosting. It was a little too strong for my taste, but the spices didn't taste artificial, which was refreshing.

  • Vanilla Cake – I love a good vanilla cake and this one didn't disappoint; it was a moist, dense cake covered in a vanilla glaze that was spotted with vanilla bean specks. I'm not a coffee drinker, but my dad said it'd be good with coffee. It wasn't too sweet, so it'd bring out the coffee's flavor. The man loves his coffee and his donuts, so I trust his opinion.

  • Raspberry Old Fashioned – After cake, old fashioneds are, in my opinion, the next best style of donut. The vanilla old fashioned was delicious and it was covered with a thick, pink raspberry glaze that was flecked raspberry seeds, so you know it was fresh. It was sweet, a little sour and enjoyable.

  • Baby Spice – It was a small, but mighty donut that reminded me of the apple cider donuts from my local apple orchard. I know I say "I love" a lot, but I love a lot of things, and I love cinnamon/sugar donuts. There was a lot of cinnamon in the Baby Spice, which gave it great flavor.

  • Whiskey Salted Chocolate – The chocolate was pleasant, but I found the salt to be a little too overpowering that it took away from the chocolate and caramel.

  • Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Glaze – Have you ever had really good fudge that melts in your mouth? You really need to try this donut if you haven't (and if you have). The consistency of the cake was perfect and the flavor of the chocolate cake balanced well with the sweetness of the vanilla glaze.

  • Coffee Cake Old Fashioned – I saved the best for last because this is going on my list of all-time favorites. The cake was a little more crumbly than the Raspberry Old Fashioned, but the flavor was still wonderful, and the cake was covered with a thick vanilla glaze and a delicious brown sugar topping. I ate the rest of the donut the next day at work and it was just as good, so that's a great donut.

My dad's favorites (in order):

  1. Vanilla Cake

  2. Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Glaze

  3. Coffee Cake Old Fashioned

My favorites (in order):

  1. Coffee Cake Old Fashioned

  2. Raspberry Old Fashioned

  3. Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Glaze

Final thoughts:

You can tell they use natural flavors in every donut, which is probably my favorite thing about Holey Moley, other than that Coffee Cake Old Fashioned. Nothing is overly sweet, and I would definitely go back to try others, like Blueberry Cake, and get a few of the ones I already had. The service was top-notch, too. When they found out I was working on a donut blog, they gave me a few extra donuts on the house, which was incredibly kind and that's reason enough for me to go back.

While I wasn't necessarily a fan of every donut I tried, I think that's to be expected. My opinion is so subjective that even thought a donut's my least favorite, it's going to be someone else's favorite. I just hope that by reading my thoughts, it inspires people to go out and try the shops.

P.S. This was my first REAL donut tasting for the blog, so I kind of sucked at getting individual photos of the donuts. I guess I have to go back and get some. Oh well.
