Stan's Donuts – Chicago

Did you know Stan's delivers? WELL, NOW YA DO.

I used to get to the city about once a month, but I've been traveling a lot for work/pleasure, so I haven't had the time. Lucky for me, Stan's Donuts delivers via FoodyDirect and it's my new favorite thing. I simply ordered on FoodyDirect and a dozen donuts were overnighted to my house. Super easy, super exciting, super delicious.

Of course, it's not the same as going into the shop and picking out your donuts and taking them home in Stan's cute pink and green box, but it's darn near close! Because each donut is wrapped in individual bags, you lose some of the physical beauty on a few, like Stan's signature pockets, but you aren't deprived of flavor.

My tasting this time was even more enjoyable because my little cousin, Sophia, joined in on the action. She had a blast waitressing and taking cut up pieces of donuts out to the living room where the my parents and her parents were. When she left that night, she asked when we can do this again, so you'll probably be seeing her opinions pop up on another post. She's a riot.

Now, time for the goooooooods:

  • Cinnamon/sugar Pretzel – So, this was different! It didn't taste like a normal soft pretzel; it was so much better. I loved how much cinnamon and sugar they caked on. (Duh.) The tasting was off to a good start.

  • Powdered Sugar Cake – This was quite possibly one of the best powdered sugar cake donuts EVER. You grow up eating the powdered sugar donut holes in a bag and you think those are the best ones ever until you have a donut like this. Even after sitting in a bag overnight, there was still a ton of powdered sugar and the cake... SO GOOD, not dry at all. I loved it.

  • Peanut Butter Pocket – I can't lie... This was not my favorite. I just don't think I'm meant for a filled donut. It was a raised donut filled with peanut butter, which, in my opinion, tasted almost burnt. I liked the donut part, but the filling was just not good.

  • Blueberry Old Fashioned – ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITES. This old fashioned melts. In. Your. Mouth. And I could see the blueberries in the glaze. It was just crispy enough on the outside without being crunchy, and it was moist and perfect on the inside. LORDT, it was so good.

  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Pocket – After trying this pocket, I knew the peanut butter wasn't burnt, it just wasn't as sweet as other PBs. I didn't like this pocket either, but I did like how the sweet chocolate balanced with the peanut butter. If their PB was sweeter, it would be too overpowering. Plus, you really can't go wrong with chocolate and peanut butter.

  • Plain Glazed Raised – As you know, I'm a cake donut kind of girl, but this raised glaze donut was delicious. I mean, you can't go to a donut shop and not get a plain glazed donut, but I really did enjoy this one. The texture of the dough was just right–not too airy, not too dense–and it was just sweet enough.

  • Lemon Pistachio Old Fashioned – I could really taste the lemon in this old fashioned. Like really taste it. It overpowered the pistachio to the point where I could only tell there was pistachio from the color and the chopped pistachios on top. I can't rave enough about how incredible their old fashioned dough is.

  • Cinnamon Roll – I'm normally not a huge fan of cinnamon rolls. Like, I can live without them, but WOW Stan's cinnamon roll was fantastic. My dad is a cinnamon roll fanatic and he thought it was unbelievable. They don't use too much icing, so you can taste the cinnamon and the dough. Loved it.

  • Cinnamon Cake – You almost need to eat cinnamon/sugar donuts right after you get them or else the sugar soaks into the dough. I'm pretty sure that was what happened here. The sugar soaked into the dough overnight, so it wasn't as prevalent when I ate it the next day. It could have used more cinnamon/sugar, but the cake was delicious, so I'm not complaining.

  • Blueberry Fritter – I'd never had  a fritter until this one, so I think my expectations were high. It wasn't bad at all, their blueberry fritter was just okay. The flavor was satisfying, but there was nothing about it that made me jump up and down like the blueberry old fashioned did. I chalk that up to my expectations, not the fritter itself.

  • Red Velvet – As much as I'm obsessed with the blueberry old fashioned, this red velvet stole the show. I've had mediocre red velvet donuts in the past, so I was pleasantly surprised at how chocolatey and perfect the cake was. Stan's fills their red velvet with cream cheese frosting and chocolate chips. You read that right. Cream cheese and chocolate chips. Inside. And topped with more cream cheese frosting and red velvet crumbs. This bad boy's going on my favorites list. It's rich, but DANG it's so delicious I could still eat 14 of these in one sitting.

  • Vanilla Sprinkle Cake – I don't know if I even need to write anything about a vanilla sprinkle cake donut because I'm SO predictable. I loved it, I loved it, I loved it. Their cake is everything to me and the only thing I wish there was more of is sprinkles.

Sophia's Favorites:

  1. Cinnamon Roll

  2. Red Velvet

  3. Glazed

  4. Peanut Butter Pocket

My Favorites:

  1. Blueberry Old Fashioned (obvious choice)

  2. Red Velvet

  3. Vanilla Sprinkle

  4. Powdered Sugar

The Blueberry Old Fashioned will always have my heart, but the Red Velvet definitely gives it a run for its money. So, if you ever have a hankering for some fire donuts, order from Stan's through FoodyDirect!
